The other good piece of advice I got (and have since doled out) is this:

Don’t spend a lot of money on your first bike. You’ll learn from your first bike what you really want. You can then plunk down more dough (if you want… ) with a better understanding of how you’re going to use it.

Could not agree with you more. Personally, fixed is where it’s at for city riding. The only additional piece of advice would be to find a good LBS (Local Bike Shop) that you feel comfortable. A good LBS can make a huge difference through the life of owning your bike…
